B-school survival for the diverse!
Over dinner today, there was this interesting conversation between me, an engineer, Dan, the american student whose undergrad studies were in religion, and anubhav, a TA, who has done his masters from CMU.
Courses that we have done till now have been even stevens in terms of difficulty between engineers and accountants. All quant oriented courses have been "laddoos" for engineers and the accountancy courses sleepwalk for the finance guys. And when in b-school, the place tends to be dominated by engineers and finance guys. So who the hell thinks about those students who make up the diversity of the student community? people who have never ever done math or money in previous life?
Talk to one of these guys and you will know! It was a revelation for me... I, being an engineer, have been cursing every bit of ambiguity and "follow-the-rule and dont ask questions" type concepts in accounts... and every non-engineer has been reduced to cartoon characters by calculus, statistics and regression... Now, what if "all" of this was completely new to you. What if, you had no idea or a starting point to all this? And then you are thrown into this whirlpool, where you have to compete with a bunch of guys who have done some of this before? Scary thought!!!
So, if you studied stuff like religion and pschycology and are aspiring b-school, my intention is not to scare you but just ensure that you are prepared for what is going to hit you...
